Tour Stop 3: 486 Sydney Street

Ashley Chavis, Devin Vermeulen, and children Ozzy, June, and Bobbie

Believed to have been built around 1890, this Queen Anne Victorian was owned by what is now Park Avenue Baptist Church on the corner, and it operated as a youth home for a time in the 50s and 60s.

Family favorites include the four original fireplaces, two clawfoot tubs, and the dining room light fixture. They also love the front hall, original staircase, and upstairs hall — what they consider architectural highlights. The entry door is also original, although it is believed the stained glass is from the 80s when the owner at the time made lots of major updates.

“The guest room is labeled ‘apartment’ in the fuse box, so we are guessing it used to have its own entrance from the porch — most likely what is now the hexagon window,” explained Ashley.

The couple first noticed the house in 2019 when it was featured on an HBO miniseries, “The Outsider.” (For fans of the show, it was Jason Bateman’s character’s house.) They were living in NYC at the time and just started to look at houses in Atlanta. They hunted for this particular house because they could see from the show that the area was lush and green, and upon realizing the house was for sale, they knew it was fate.

The kitchen and bathrooms in the back would have been added when plumbing became available sometime in the early 1900s. Since moving in, the family installed all new windows; refinished the ground level floors when they discovered original heart pine under layers of finish; converted the basement into an office and full bathroom suite; renovated the downstairs bath with new fittings, wallpaper, and fixtures; and added bead board to the guest room. The couple is especially happy with the new kitchen they designed.

Tourgoers might notice a 70+-year-old copy of The Night Before Christmas, which belonged to Devin’s dad as a child. Also, the coat rack mirror in the upstairs hall still has a “prop” label from the show, though it looks as if it is original to the house!
